A Near Future Retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Alainn’s father is not a bad man. He’s a genius and an inventor. When he’s hired to create the robot Rose, Alainn knows taking the money is a mistake.

Rose acts like a human. She looks exactly like Alainn. But, something in her comes out wrong.

To save her father from a five year prison sentence, Alainn takes Rose’s place. She says goodbye to the sun and goes to live in a tower no human is allowed to enter. She becomes the prisoner of a man no human is allowed to see.

Believing that a life of servitude lies ahead, Alainn finds a very different fate awaits her in the company of the strange, scarred recluse.

Received an ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Let us fast forward to the year 2026. Robots are now aiding in everyday life. They even assist as companions for people. Alainn’s father is an inventor and has created different robots for these purposes. He has been commissioned to create Rose. Rose is a robot that has been created in the image of his daughter. She is able to be a companion in every way. However Rose has some flaws that make it difficult for Alainn’s father to send her off to Mr. Garbhan. The man that no one has ever seen, but has paid an exuberant amount of money to have Rose created. Now Alainn must help. She is coerced into taking the position of Rose (for the time being) so another robot can be created and sent over. All of this done and executed by Rose (the ‘defected one’).

Aliann is now a prisoner in a tower isolated from the outside world. She is trapped, alone, and terrified unsure what will happen to her if she is discovered as not being a robot.  She craves the outdoors and life outside the confines she is trapped in. She is unable to leave or go outside, due to contamination that will cause Mr. Garbhan to become ill. The only time she interacts with Mr. Garbhan is once a day at dinner. To her it is torture. She doesn’t even know what he looks like. Which makes matters even more difficult. These two unlikely characters must learn how to adapt to each other and learn what true affection is. These two opposites find a solace within their budding relationship. They discover true passion and love that can come from an unlikely source.

This story is a little bizarre. It is futuristic with still some modern day elements. It has the beauty and the beast concept and the villain in the story isn’t realized till closer towards the end. The robot elements were interesting. The story is told from the POV of Aliann; however, there are some random chapters from Aliann’s brother, her friend, and Rose.

Should you read this book? If you are a Beauty and the Beast fan, like I am, you will want to read it. However, I had much higher hopes for the book. I give it a 3. It was okay. Probably won’t read again, but something that I will remember.
